Team Format

You have seen the event made popular by Bryson and Daly, you too can see if you have what it takes to break 50 from the Red Tees in a two man scramble. For Balboa, you need to birdie all the par 4's and 3's and then eagle the par 5's and still find one more shot out there. Don't worry we are going to be including handicaps, so a NET Break 50 is on the table also.

Team Format - 4 Man Scramble

4 Man Team Scramble - White Tees

  • Competition will be a 4-person scramble.
  • Each member of the team must use his tee shot twice. No Mulligans are allowed.
  • Please be at the course and ready to begin at least 30 minutes prior to the start time.
  • NO SCORECARDS - GOLF GENIUS ONLY ( I will not be at this event, and it's only 1 score per group )
  • All members of the group will hit from the tee. The captain will then select the best drive. From that point, all members of the group will hit a second shot. Again, the captain will select the shot providing the most advantageous lie. This procedure will continue until the ball is holed out. Only one score per hole per team is to be recorded.
  • A player’s lie may be improved by one club length (no closer to the hole) through the green with the exception of hazards. For example, if you elect to play a ball from a sand trap, the player whose ball you have chosen to play can lift clean and place the ball and then the other team members will be allowed to place the ball (no closer to the hole). Once players have reached the green, the ball may not be placed to improve a player’s lie (must be placed at spot where it lies).
  • All putts must be holed out. No gimmies.
  • In the event of a tie in score, USGA 9,6,3,1 will be used for a card-off.

Team with Guests

Join us for a day of heartfelt tribute and friendly competition at the Balboa Park Golf Course on Wednesday, June 12th, for Nancy's Tournament. This special event honors the memory of Nancy Lovrenich, who left an indelible mark on the hearts of those who knew her, especially her son, Me! Nancy shared her passion for golf with me making the golf course a sacred place full of my most cherished memories. This tournament, falling on what would have been Nancy's 85th birthday, is a celebration of her life and the love she had for the game.

In this member-guest format, participants are encouraged to bring a significant woman in their lives—be it a wife, daughter, or mother—to continue the legacy of bonding over golf, just as Nancy did. This event is more than a competition; it's a tribute to the bonds and memories created on the golf course.

Tee Details - White and Red Tees will be used:
Team Best Ball, with players using their current handicap indexes to ensure fairness and competitiveness. The tournament will be played primarily from the White tees (69.2/120), with specific players designated to play from the red tees to suit all playing abilities.

Nancy's Tournament is the only sanctioned member-guest event in our series, offering a unique opportunity to honor Nancy's memory in a setting filled with camaraderie and the spirit of competition. Whether you are an avid golfer or someone who cherishes the connections made through the game, this tournament is an ideal occasion to celebrate Nancy's legacy and create new, lasting memories with your family and friends.

Weather Forecast

Pack your sunscreen and maybe a sombrero for shade! The early forecast predicts a sunny day with temperatures flirting with the 70s. Perfect for a day on the greens—and for spotting those pesky sand traps.

2 Man Shamble

Is your life feeling a bit like a shamble? Well, it’s time to tee off and straighten it out with a round of golf at the 2 Man Shamble! Come down to the green with your best golf buddy (don't forget to sign them up too!) and maybe, just maybe, you can fix both your game and your life in one go. Here’s what’s in store:

Weather Forecast: The morning kicks off at 7:00 AM, with mild temperatures around 66°F. But hold onto your hats and umbrellas, folks! There’s a swinging 61% chance of rain. Might as well think of the rain as nature's way of adding a water hazard to every hole!

Start Times: Bright and early at 7:00 AM. Make sure to set those alarms—though, if your life’s already in shambles, what’s an early morning wake-up call but another adventure?

Partner Up: This isn’t a solo mission; it’s a duo disaster—or masterpiece, depending on how you swing it. Mention a partner when you sign up and make sure they’re ready to help you un-shamble your game.

Lift, Clean, and Place: Yes, it’s in effect. Because sometimes life gives you mud, and we give you permission to tidy it up a bit before you take your shot.

Payouts: We’re talking Gross and Net payouts! Whether your game is top-notch or your scores need a little creative accounting, there’s a chance to win something...well that something is probably a $5.

So, if your golf game is as shambly as your desk or garage, it’s time to sort it all out—or at least have fun trying! Sign up for the 2 Man Shamble and let’s see if we can’t hit life’s problems like they’re all just a long par 5.

Hop 2 It Individual Tournament Summary

Hey Hop Stars! Ready to jump into some serious fun? Mark your calendars for the "Hop 2 It Individual" tournament, hopping into action on April 10th, 2024. Don't be a sleepy bunny - the tee-off starts at the bright and early time of 7:00 AM!

Weather Forecast: Looks like Mother Nature is joining our hoppy celebration! The morning is set to be a real treat with pleasant temperatures and a slight chance of showers - perfect for those early birdies! (And no, we don't mean the ones with feathers!)

Fresh Greens Alert!: This will be our very first Wednesday tournament after the greens have recovered from their springtime spa treatment. Expect lush, rolling fairways as rejuvenated as the Easter Bunny after a carrot smoothie!

Lift, Clean, and Place Rule: Just like the Easter Bunny hides eggs, we're keeping it fair with the Lift, Clean, and Place rule in effect. So, if your ball lands in a not-so-ideal spot, feel free to give it a little nudge (within the rules, of course - no bunny business!).

Gross and Net Payouts: Here’s the golden egg - we've got both Gross and Net payouts! Whether you’re an eagle-eyed pro or just here for the hops, there's a chance for everyone to win big. So, polish those clubs, practice your swing, and get ready to hop your way to victory!

Remember, it's all about having fun and enjoying the game. Who knows, you might even spot the Easter Bunny doing a dance on the 18th hole! So, sign up today, and let's make this a tournament to remember!

Fore! Watch Out for Flying Golf Balls and Leprechauns!

Golf enthusiasts and leprechaun fans, gather 'round! The much-anticipated Leprechaun FOREplay - Best Ball of 2 Tournament is just around the corner, taking place on the emerald fairways this March 20th, 2024. So, grab your clubs, your four-leaf clovers, and your best golfing buddy for a round that promises more fun than finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow!

Weather Forecast: March 20th, 2024

Prepare for a whimsical day on the course, as our resident leprechaun weatherman predicts a mix of sunshine and magical rainbows - perfect for a round of golf. With temperatures sitting comfortably in the mid-60s, it's ideal weather for sporting your lucky golfing hat. Just beware of sudden gusts of wind that might just be a mischievous leprechaun trying to throw off your game!

The Format: Best Ball of 2

Get ready for a twist on the classic game with our Best Ball of 2 format. Each two-man team will play their own balls throughout the round. However, only the best score from the two on each hole counts towards the team's overall score. So, if you land in a sand trap, no worries! If your partner's sitting pretty on the fairway, you're still in good standing. It's like having a leprechaun's luck on every hole!

Handicap Posting and Final Hurrah Before Greens Maintenance

Attention, serious golfers! This isn't just a frolic with the wee folk. This round is postable for your handicap, so bring your A-game. It's a great chance to improve your stats before the greens undergo their annual spring maintenance. Remember, this will be the last tournament played on these pristine greens before our grounds crew works their magic. So, let's make it count and may the best team win!

Leprechaun Comments:

"Sure and begorrah, don't ye be forgettin' to tip your cap to the leprechauns – they might just help ye find your ball in the rough!"

"Remember, lads and lassies, it's not just about the score, it's about the fun ye'll be having with us magical folk!"

So, whether you're here for the competition or the sheer delight of sharing the course with possible leprechaun sightings, the Leprechaun FOREplay - Best Ball of 2 Tournament is set to be an unforgettable day. Sign up now, and may the luck of the Irish be with ye!

Welcome to  "Annual 3 Clubs and a Putter" golf tournament, taking place at the scenic Balboa Park Golf Course! Get ready to tee off on February 28th, 2024, but don't you dare bring your entire club collection - it's time to get minimalist!

Weather Forecast: Mother Nature seems to have a sense of humor too! The forecast for the morning of February 28th is sunny with a touch of whimsy. Expect a comfortable temperature, perfect for those who like their golf with a side of sunshine. Remember to bring your sunglasses, sunscreen, and maybe a hat that says, "I'm a serious golfer...with only 3 clubs!"

The Rules: You can only bring three clubs and a putter. That's right, just THREE clubs. Why? Because who needs a full set when you can challenge your golfing prowess (and patience) with limited tools? Choose your three clubs wisely – it's like picking your favorite children, but harder.

The Comedy: Having more clubs doesn’t always mean lower scores, it just means more options to blame for your bad shot! Ever heard someone say, “I would have hit that better if I had my 7.5 iron”? Neither have we. So, in the spirit of fun (and a bit of sarcasm), we’re keeping it simple.

Teeing Off: We'll be hitting from the white tees – because let's face it, we're not all PGA pros. The white tees are like the middle child: not too intimidating, but still a challenge, especially when you're trying to decide whether to use your hybrid, iron, or just throw the ball (just kidding, no throwing allowed).

Remember, it's all about strategy, creativity, and a little bit of luck. Who knew golf could be a mental game? Oh wait, every golfer ever.

So, grab your favorite three clubs (plus a putter), wear your most outrageous golf attire, and get ready to swing, miss, laugh, and maybe even hit a few good shots. See you at the first tee!

Team Format - Alternate Shot

2 Man Team Event - Alternate Shot

Alternate Shots - Alternate Shot, also called Foursomes, is a competition format in which 2-person teams alternate hitting the same ball. The first player tees off, the second player hits the second shot, the first player hits the third shot, and so on until the ball is holed.

Rules For This Tournament:

1. Alternate Drives - No matter who ends a hole, you will alternate the person hitting the drive based on the previous hole. It will be ok to have a player, tap in a putt and then hit the drive on the next hole, IF that player didn't hit the drive on the hole they just tapped in on. So think about the holes that need to have clearing drives, if you are bringing your sweetie!

2. Mixed Teams - If your guest player is a lady, or a beginner. They may hit from the Reds.

3. Penalty Shots - If Player A hits it into the water, the drop will be used as Player B's shot and then Player A will hit the shot. Effectively allowing the player to hit twice in a row.

4. Balls - You will play the entire hole with the same ball, you will not be allowed to switch out balls in the middle of the hole based on the player hitting. Unless you hit it in the water, and you would need to play a new ball.

Team Format

It's the annual Pinehurst, which if memory serves me is a two man alternate shot event.  You both tee off, you then hit your partners drive, then pick whichever ball is in a better, then (this is important), whoever's ball you choose, you alternate shots on that ball into the hole.  An example would be Players A & B tee off on the 1st hole.  Player A hits Player B's drive onto the green, then Player B hits Player A's drive really close to the hole, so you choose that ball.  Player A will now try to make that putt, but if he misses, Player B must tap it in.  Then you do that all over again on all the holes.  This will not be a postable round.  And you need a partner, so that is something you could put in the Request box after you enter, preferably after reaching out to said potential partner before you enter.

10am Shotgun - in conjunction with The Chili Dippers

We have been able to arrange a new Away Event for this date:

Balboa members are invited to play (and bring a friend to play if you'd like) at La Valle Coastal Club (formerly Morgan Run CC) in Del Mar.

We have openings for approximately 20 players. First come (and paid), first served!

Cost is $90. This amount should be paid by 12/24 via Venmo (@Peter-Berk), or Zelle or PayPal (berkabee@happyaccidents.net), as I, on behalf of all players that day, need to make a deposit and final payment to the course well before the event date itself.

Should there be enough Bal players to have a competition, an additional prize fund amount, usually $20, would be withdrawn from your Bal Club Credits account.

BTW: The Chili Dippers play virtually every Monday (unless it's a holiday, then it's Tuesday) at a wide variety of courses around San Diego county. We played 23 different courses during 2023! Cost to join $25 a year. Glad to have you and friends join.

Co-Director of the Chili's (and former 2010-21 Director of the Balboa Men's Club Weekday Events
